Izakaya, 居酒屋 is made up of three kanji with the meaning, in order, “stay-drink-place.” A spot to grab a drink, settle in, and get comfortable.
They are one of the most common restaurant types in Japan and a popular spot for friends and coworkers to meet up for a drinking party or to wind down after.
Izakaya is usually intimidating to non-Japanese due to its menu & slow pace as food is normally ordered slowly over several courses rather than all at once. The kitchen serves food when it is ready, rather than in formal courses of typical restaurants.
